Catalina Island
This past month the traveling twins #travelingtwins boarded a ferry in Dana Point to visit one of the eight channel islands off the coast of California. #thecoffeeimporters #JonsFishMarket our favorite eateries of the week! This would be a new island for KC! Of the eight, Kat has been on seven.
The ferry #CatalinaExpress goes faithfully daily. Even in inclement weather. It was that kind of trip. Picture that green faced emoji. Needless to say the crew was busy handing out sea sickness bags to those in need. Having traveled by boat countless times this twin knew not to eat. The other twin had a light breakfast (it did not sit perfectly, but she was able to ride the storm). Every individual has their own tricks for high seas, know before you go!
The good news was that I knew the weather and ferry ride would be better on the ride home. Seas were calming and we would be surfing the swells.
Due to a foot injury, the island excursions were light. We walked the town of Avalon, shopped, had a sunny lunch at the water’s edge and waited in the long queue to board the boat back to the mainland.
Fun Facts: Native Americans, Spanish Explorers, fur hunters and smugglers inhabited the island prior to “development”. Eventually, the island ends up in the hands William Wrigley Jr. Yes, that chewing gum magnate. The island was further developed. The Chicago Cubs had spring training on the island (Wrigley owned the Cubs). Today about 88% of the island is controlled by Catalina Island Conservancy. The balance not owned by the conservancy is owned by Santa Catalina Island Company, descendants of Wrigley- minus the parcels that compose the city of Avalon.
